Room 21 Kindergarten News
Mrs. Florence’s class has been anxiously awaiting the 100th Day of School!! Students celebrated by counting out 100 cheerios to make necklaces, making 100 tally marks, making designs out of 100 sticky dots, and of course reading books with the “100” day theme. What a difference 100 days makes in the life of a kindergartner!
We were also proud to send 2 very full boxes of goodies to Kylee Bingaman’s uncle and aunt who are currently serving our country in Iraq. Room 21 parents ROCK!! Thanks so much for your continued support.

Construction Update
The projected completion date for the new classrooms, cafeteria and kitchen is the end of March or early April. The next phase will be to begin on the new Learning Resource Center outside of the 2001 addition. This part of the project is probably going to begin in mid-April. This means that we will have to relocate the playground for the last several weeks of school. Discussion as to where this might be is in process, but rest assured that there will be a playground area so the kids can get outside.

TECHNOLOGY
Rooms 1-11, which is all of the rooms from the office down to the fourth grades, now have functioning SMART Boards. The company training representative came to a staff meeting and gave the entire staff an overview of how to use SMART Boards. A few days later we had Mrs. Harmon, one our fifth grade teachers at Green Springs, conduct half day training for those teachers in rooms 1-11. Mrs. Billow assisted in this training. The SMART Board is a fantastic teaching tool. The range of possible applications in the classroom is amazing. When the remodeling of the South main building is complete after this summer every room in our building will have a SMART Board. We have eleven teachers that can get a head start on learning how to use them.

“Reading is a Sweet Treat”
The students at South Main discovered that during “Right to Read” week, reading truly was a sweet treat. We started the week with an assembly that the kids enjoyed. Chip Richter, a guitarist and vocalist, got the kids involved in song and movements. Some of his songs include; Ice Cream, River of Life, Hey There, How do You Do, and Lady Bugs Living Room.
During the week the students enjoyed Community Readers, 4 reading stations decorated in theme, and treats donated by area business. Also, the students eagerly waited for the daily candy trivia question. Winners were drawn for each grade level every day of the week.
We concluded the week with a showing of the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in the gym. The students sat captured by the magic of the original movie most had never had the privilege to see. It was enjoyed by all!
The Right to Read Week Committee would like to send out a special thanks to Wendy’s, McDonalds, and Applebees for donating gift certificates and treats that the students enjoyed. We would also like to thank Dr. Sauber for the donation of tooth brushes and tooth paste. Finally, we would like to thank the Community Readers for volunteering a portion of their free time to read to the students of South Main Elementary.
